Let's all think about this one

Does this really surprise anyone?

Just take a look:

"The truth has got to be told. No more cover-ups."

-- Nina Rhodes-Hughes a witness in the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, claiming that gunman Sirhan Sirhan did not act alone

"Why do we punish sex so much more than anything else?"

If you're offended by the "F word" and other crudity, don't watch please. It's Bill Maher, after all. Also the first part of this video (the "new rules" bit) is really rather silly. It's the end I want you to see.

The best line: "Clinton lied about a blow job; got impeached. Bush lied about a war and didn't."

Something worth remembering

Mind you, we already knew this:

Exclusive: Senate probe finds little evidence of effective "torture"

Here's how the article gets started:

(Reuters) - "A nearly three-year-long investigation by Senate Intelligence Committee Democrats is expected to find there is little evidence the harsh 'enhanced interrogation techniques' the CIA used on high-value prisoners produced counter-terrorism breakthroughs.
...
"The backers of such techniques, which include 'water-boarding,' sleep deprivation and other practices critics call torture, maintain they have led to the disruption of major terror plots and the capture of al Qaeda leaders.
~
"One official said investigators found 'no evidence' such enhanced interrogations played 'any significant role' in the years-long intelligence operations which led to the discovery and killing of Osama bin Laden last May by U.S. Navy SEALs."

It has been known for a very long time that torture is not useful for obtaining intelligence. It is, rather, quite effective in obtaining false confessions.

When are we, as a nation, going to wake up?

Sojourners Quote of the Week

Well. This is really very, very interesting:

"For years, we dreamed of America, but now that dream is no good. There are no jobs and too many problems. We don't want to go."

- Pedro Morales, 18, of Jalisco, Mexico, explaining why immigration to the U.S. has stalled

My apologies

Sorry I haven't posted for a while, dear people. I've been down with a very unpleasant cold and cough.

Be back soon!

A rather unexpected headline...

Well, this is certainly intriguing.

When Mormons Were Socialists: Why the Mormon Church's Founders Would be Very Disappointed in Mitt Romney

Here's a brief quotation that is very interesting:

"In 1848, [Brigham] Young famously declared, 'There shall be no private ownership of the streams that come out of the canyons, nor the timber that grows on the hills. These belong to the people: all the people.' "

Appropriate re-post

I may have shared this one with you before, but it needs to be said over and over and over (IMHO).

Something ominous

The following was published on Monday, April 9:

"Everybody has this uneasy feeling ... You're out enjoying this nice March weather, but you know it's not a good thing."

-- Jerry Meehl, climate scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., warning that the record temperatures in March may be a sign of global warming

True, I'm afraid

And it grieves me deeply:

Interesting way of putting it....

My choice for quote of the day

Found on Facebook:

"A whole bunch of folks voted Republican because the Democrats would 'take away their guns.' Now the have their guns and no jobs."

-- Robert L Harris, member of The Christian Left

So VERY difficult to understand

Why?

I actually understand this. I really do. I can easily imagine being in this man's predicament. What I don't understand is how humanity, as a species, can allow its members to be brought to this point.

"I find no other solution than this dignified end before I start searching through the trash for food."

A real eye opener

Here's a very illuminating short essay I saw on Facebook:

I am a 21 year-old student from Finland.

It makes me sad to hear how Americans are suffering.

Here, our taxes are high but we all benefit from them.

I grew up in the countryside and always had access to the same services that people in the city did.

My university is known around the world in my field and my education is not only free, but my government pays ME to go to university. Everyone has a right to this.

Everyone has a right to the best healthcare, there is no such thing as health insurance.

I am young now and able to take risks and pursue my passion because I will never have to worry about starving if I loose my job or my business fails.

I know that when I am old my state pension will be there for me so that I can enjoy my retirement.

We call this the Nordic Model, and under it we live well and our businesses are among the most competitive in the world. I am grateful to have been born a citizen of a country that cares for its people, and I hope that one day the USA will take example from us.

I am the 99%.

I think no comment is necessary.

Wow!

This is one of the Time Magazine quotes of the day:

"It is not so much our triumph as a triumph of the people who have decided that they have to be involved in the political process in this country."

-- Aung San Suu Kyi, democracy advocate in Burma, after her party's landslide victory in the country's historic by-elections

She is a powerhouse.
