The blog is an interesting combination of postings on mental health, public health, social work, education, politics and spirituality. I recommend that you take a look. One of the most pernicious effects of religion is that it tends to divorce morality from the reality of human and animal suffering. Religion allows people to imagine that their concerns are moral when they are not - that is, when they have nothing to do with suffering or its alleviation. Indeed, religion allows people to imagine that their concerns are moral when they are highly immoral - that is, when pressing these concerns inflicts unnecessary and appalling suffering on innocent human beings. This explains why Christians like yourself expend more 'moral' energy opposing abortion than fighting genocide. It explains why you are more concerned about human embryos than about the lifesaving promise of stem-cell research, And it explains why you can preach against condom use in sub-Saharan Africa while millions die from AIDS there each year.
-- Sam Harris, Letter To A Christian Nation
"In the post-meditative experience become a child of illusion" is a slogan from the Tibetan mind training tradition. We engage the world as we experience it all the while realizing that reality is not as it seems to be.

New blog of interest
I found a new blog yesterday that's called Markham's Behavioral Health. While browsing through the archives, I came across the following:
Hi Elle
ReplyDeleteDo people like this know we exist or do they ignore us because they realise Christian humanists are the most dangerous people on the planet?
"Our people" have been saying this for, at least, 400 years and thinking it for 2000 years.
We should have got the copyright.
Yeah, MadPriest, I know what you're saying. I think we're being ignored because, for some reason, the fundamentalists/evangelicals have managed to co-opt the label, "Christian". What such people don't understand in the slightest is that it was my very orthodox Christian formation that gave me my liberal conscience - and that's true for many other liberals.
