Exploiting tragedies that they themselves create

Here's a comment I found on Unknown News:

The Republican reaction to the hurricane is so disgusting on so many levels it is nearly impossible to name them all.

They are handing out cards with John McCain's campaign slogan on one side and a list of disaster relief phone numbers on the other ... because they can't provide even basic information unless they get something out of it. They have sent up a special website for people to contribute to the relief effort ... because government has removed itself from the business of helping Americans who are suffering.

They are using the storm as an excuse to keep George W. away from the Republican convention entirely, the first time a sitting president hasn't attended a convention in modern history. They're using it to make themselves look like they give a damn about the poor people on the Gulf Coast, even though a government that actually cared would have fixed the levies by now, or better yet, not allowed them to fail in the first place. And by leaving the convention schedule for the next few days uncertain, media is stuck talking about that uncertainty rather than talking about the people who are scheduled to speak or the policies they are proposing for a McCain presidency.

And they know they can get away with all of it because the mainstream media is never going to be bold enough to point out that the Republican Party has become nothing but a PR machine that specializes in exploiting tragedies that they themselves create, which in turn allows them to continue to make life worse and worse and worse for almost every single person on the planet.

Pretty sickening, if you ask me.

  2. I read this, and I recall Republican convention images of riot-geared police officers and soldiers dressed head-to-toe in black armour -- no human attributes to be seen; they could have been robots -- spraying unprotected faces with scalding fluids, thrashing summer-clothed bodies, and arresting people for "conspiracy to protest" (if I recall the term correctly).

Did anything like this occur at the Democratic convention?

... When I think of how the present American government ... ah, *governs*, my mind flips to Burma.

I also think that it's time to read Orwell's *1984* again. Then Margaret Atwood's *The Handmaid's Tale*. Huxley's *Brave New World* too. The ramifications of Republican rule being elected (or bought $) into office again are truly frightening. I live in Canada and I don't want this kind of government next door.

... Thanks, Ellie. May I post this piece to my blog?

  3. Sure, Jaliya. I got it from Unknown News.

And I'm with you. The Handmaid's Tale haunts me these days.
