Small - both beautiful and eco-friendly

Are you at all familiar with the "tiny house" movement? I think it's very impressive indeed. Mind you, although I have lived in very small spaces in the past, these days I really appreciate having a bit more space (especially with my four animals). But I have great respsect for those people who manage to get rid of most of their stuff and, thereby, hugely reduce their ecological footprint.

Here's a blog dedicated to the movement:

  1. I think these are beautiful little houses. I've considered them for the day I get to the point of actually buying a house. Bookshelf space would be the main drawback for me...I frequent my public library, but there is something about being able to reach up and pull a book off of my shelf to check something whenever I want that I would have a hard time giving up.

  2. Hi, Maggie.

Yes, I know what you mean. But I've seen some tiny house plans that factor in book shelf space. Mind you, none of them will have a HUGE amount but it's surprising how many books you can get in an area with creative planning.

I guess one thing I really like about some of the houses is that some are designed to be entirely off the grid - you know, solar panels and that sort of thing. That's really a very attractive idea.

  3. What about plumbing? I don't think we want to go back to out-houses... lol

  4. You'd be amazed, Classof65. Most of the "tiny houses" do indeed have plumbing. Do browse among some of the postings on the Tiny House Blog and you'll see!
