I've just read an article I'd like to recommend but it's really impossible to offer an excerpt that will give you a good idea of its message. Here's the title:

Conservatives Live in a Different Moral Universe -- And Here's Why It Matters

And the lead is this: "Liberals and conservatives have highly different moral priorities. And we have to understand them if we want to accomplish anything."

It's very thought provoking - as are the comments that follow.

There was a link within the article which takes you to his site where you can actually take various surveys. If you didn't check it out, I highly recommend it. I am only about 3/4 of the way through (you can log out and then back in later) and have found the results very fascinating. No wonder I have often found myself able to make a case for each side of an issue which many people have interpreted as my being wishy washy.

Yes, and Mary Rowlandson was convinced that the Indians holding her captive in the 17th c just had different moral priorities, that they had an essentially different way of looking at things and that her readers needed to understand them if they wanted to accomplish anything. Sorry -- I try to teach against these kinds of simplistic binaries.
